At the moment we are studying the book of Ruth in the Sunday evening Services. Last Sunday we looked at the character of Naomi, a lady whose faith and character had a great influence on her daughter in law Ruth. We also compared Ruth and Orpah. Both of them accompanied Naomi for part of the way on her journey back to Bethlehem, both of them wept, both of them said that they would go back to Bethlehem with Naomi. But Orpah then kissed Naomi and returned to Moab and its false gods whereas Ruth clung to her.
Ruth’s words:”…where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge, your people shall be my people, and your God my God; where you die I will die, and there will I be buried.” show the sort of commitment that we should have to the Lord Jesus. There are many people who, like Orpah, are only prepared to go so far, who get emotional and say the right things but then turn back to their old life; but I trust that you will follow Jesus with the same determination that Ruth had.
